Catherine Wright "Art Yoga Cat" believes in the possibility of inspiring people to breathe, move, and be. She is a nationally touring multi-media performance artist, certified dance and yoga instructor, and an award-winning director and choreographer. She earned a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah on a Presidential Scholarship and had the Elizabeth R. Hayes Graduate Assistantship for her MFA pursuit from the same University. Her Master of Arts in Education from Minnesota State University, Mankato focused on the integration of technology into a performing arts curriculum.
Wright has over twenty years in the dance and media arts industry and has performed for Chuck Davis, Trisha Brown, Steve Koester, Ellen Bromberg, and Alwin Nikolais via Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. She has directed and been commissioned to choreograph 4 full-evening productions through the Jerome Foundation, the Walker Art Center, and the Bush Fellowship Foundation. Her interdisciplinary choreography has toured nationally in Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago, Kawaihae Harbor, Portland, Santa Cruz, New York City, Syracuse, and Utica. With twenty years of pedagogy experience in both high school and higher education, she believes in core-centered classroom and the interdisciplinary power of fusing Fine Arts with science, humanities, and technology. She recently presented her lecture demonstration "Performance & Media: Creating an Interdisciplinary Environment" for the Hamilton College Student Dance Alliance, New Hartford STEAM summer camp, the 2017 Project Fibonacci STEAM Conference in Rome, NY, and for the Student Dance Alliance at Hamilton College. She was the tenured Director of Dance at Apple Valley High School from 2002 -2012, where she designed the "Choreography and Media" curriculum, taught 6 academic dance classes per day, and directed 4 annual productions. Her current commission is through 4 Elements Art Studio as an instructor of Creative Movement and Pottery for Pre-K students at Upstate Cerebral Palsy, where she guides and interacts with over 200 children across the Mohawk Valley.
Wright is an E-RYT 200 hour Yoga Alliance certified instructor. She completed her 200 hour Power Vinyasa Yoga Certification through Minneapolis’s Core Power Yoga Studio in 2012. Over the last five years, she has attended New York City Dharma Yoga and Vangeline Butoh Workshops, Dharma Door Authentic Movement and Somatic Therapy Retreats, School for Contemporary Dance and Thought’s Contact Improvisation Seminars, Wanderlust Yoga Festival Stratton, Wanderlust Yoga Festival Mont Tremblant, the Kalani Ecstatic Dance & Movement Medicine Retreat, and the Lava Roots Drum & Dance Conference. Through the training and material learned at these workshops, combined with her dance background and vinyasa certification, Catherine has created a unique Yoga, Meditation, and Movement Therapy practice. She is currently an instructor for Yoga Fusion at PrattMWP College of Art & Design, New York Power Authority, Utica Dance. She enjoys co-hosting Ecstatic Dance events with various collaborators and DJ's during seasonal transitions.
